Let us take y’all back to the years of 1987 to 1992, when Jheri Curls were transitioning into high top fades. Or when crinkle irons, Pump It Up spritz, and Finisheen were a girl’s best friend. When beepers and rope chains were a must. And when MTV finally realized that adding a Black female VJ, Downtown Julie Brown, to their roster would add much needed flavor and diversity to their channel.

Downtown Julie Brown’s Still Got It!
Downtown Julie Brown was the MTV hostess with the most-ess, who made her catchphrase “Wubba, wubba, wubba,” famous. She was the bubbly Jamaican/British, fashion forward host for the show, “Club MTV, who stood apart from the rest and oftentimes shined brighter than the artists she interviewed. Fast forward to today and she’s 54 years young, lookin’ like she hasn’t aged much at all…

Meet Her Husband & Stepdaughter
In 2001, Downtown Julie Brown, jumped the broom with her German husband, Martin Schuermann (shown below), a film producer and former CEO of Intermedia. They’ve just celebrated their 17 year wedding anniversary and Julie posted this lovey dovey tribute to her man on Instagram:

“On this day 17 years ago I married this amazing man…not a Day has gone by without a knowing of how lucky I am:) #love #forever #blessed …it’s also his birthday! Happy April 4th to us 🍾 “
Julie has been livin’ that bi-continent life for years, residing in both Italy and Los Angeles with her family. In a previous interview, she gushed about the first time she met Schuermann and how quickly they got married:
“I met my husband [Martin Schuermann in 2000] and it all happened very quickly. I met Prince Charming and within the year we were married, and have been married ever since.” via Black Enterprise

After meeting her well-off husband, and possibly also having stashed few coins from her own hard work, Downtown Julie decided she was not about to hop on the reality show train, just to have relevancy. Therefore, she was fortunate enough to not feel forced to take on projects that she felt compromised who she was.

Downtown Julie Brown: “There was no need to work, so to speak, and there was no need to just do anything. I didn’t want to jump on the reality bandwagon and do the stuff just for the sake of being out there. I prefer to stick in music and stay in my lane. […] I mean there’s just no way you can tell me I’m older than 25, but in all honesty I’m not. But there are plenty of shows that are appropriate for myself, for my knowledge, my background, and my experience.” -via BE
Julie had also devoted much of her time toward helping to raise her now 20-something year old stepdaughter, Gianna Schuermann (pictured below), whom she’s known since she was a toddler.

Eventually, Julie began work in various music media projects with Billboard and other companies. As of today, her current gig is a DJ/host on her Sirius XM Satellite radio show, titled “90s on 9.”
“I’m happy to be back involved in music. Thanks everyone that remembers me and if they don’t, say hi if you see me anyway–I’m probably going to be in a sequin hat and funky boots,” said Downtown Julie Brown to BE. Do your thang Ms. Lady!
