Herbie Hancock is one of the most masterfully skilled musicians/producers in the music industry. We can never forget the classic instrumentals he had us jammin’ to back in the day, especially his 1983 hit, “Rockit.”
Herbie was 33 years old then and today at 77 years young, he hasn’t slowed down one bit. In fact, he’s finding new ways to entertain his audience and the audience of a younger generation.
Starring In Popular Sci-Fi Film w/ Rihanna
Herbie is in the acting industry now. That’s right, he put his keyboards to the side for a minute to star in the new popular sci-fi film, Valerian and the City of A Thousand Planets, alongside the likes of singer, Rihanna, and actress, Cara Delevigne. Both ladies are in their 20’s, but Herbie was able to hold his own on screen with the youngins.
The new schoolers watching the film, probably will have no idea who Herbie is, but all they need to know is that he’s created far more albums than their favorite rapper or singer, including Rihanna. Also he was an innovator in the game, not a follower…unlike some of the new school artists today, who could stand to learn a thing or two from Herbie. Anywho, in the almost $200 million film, Valerian and the City of A Thousand Planets, Herbie plays a futuristic character, ‘the Minister of Defense’ in the galaxy-esque film.
Herbie’s Recent Appearance At “Valerian” Premiere With Rihanna & Others
When speaking to The Thrillest, he explained why he’s so amped up about the film. He said that when director, Luc Besson, contacted him to ask him if he wanted to be a part of the film, he didn’t need much convincing:
Via The Thrillest: “Are you kidding? I’m a geek,” the 77-year-old pianist told Besson, the director behind films like The Fifth Element and Lucy. “I naturally gravitate towards science-fiction films. That’s the nature of my being.”
And if you thought Herbie Hancock was no longer creating new music, think again, here’s what was reported about his upcoming music project:
Via TheThrillest: He describes the recording sessions for the upcoming project as a workshop-like environment where ideas flowed freely. There’s no official release date yet — he’s touring this summer, testing out material on the road, and he says they’re still trying to get some rappers who he can’t mention yet on the record, too — but he thinks it might end up getting released in bits and pieces rather than all at once. “Because of technology today, there is no single method of releasing a record project,” he says. “There’s a lot of flexibility in doing that.”
When he’s not in the studio, he’s on the stage, killin’ it in front of arena packed audiences…
