Chaka Khan told a very interesting story about the time that she first met the late, great, Prince. Although Chaka and Prince became really good friends afterwards and she referred to him as her brother, their first encounter wasn’t exactly what Chaka was expecting. In fact, she admitted that she was actually somewhat disappointed at first. But once you see the rest of what Chaka had to say, you’ll understand why.
They ultimately developed a brother-sister type of bond, but Chaka says it wasn’t always like that. ILOSM family, check out what she revealed below.
CHAKA WAS NOT EXCITED TO MEET PRINCE: “He Tricked Me”
In her book, “Through The Fire,” Chaka Khan revealed this about the day that she met a then-unknown Prince:
“I met Prince because he tricked me, sometime in the 1970’s, while I was playing San Francisco. I was in a hotel when my phone rung. It was Prince pretending to be Sly Stone. I said, “I didn’t know you were in town!” It had been a long time since I’d seen or spoken to Sly Stone. Could I come meet him at the studio he was working in? ‘Sure!'”
But See What Happened Once Chaka Got To The Studio…
CHAKA FINDS OUT SLY STONE WASN’T THERE
Chaka continued, “When I got to the studio, we couldn’t find Sly or anybody else for that matter, until we stepped in this one little room and spied this skinny little guy with a humongous Afro. I asked, “You seen Sly?” He replied, “That was me that called you.” I asked, ‘And who the hell are you?'”
“Even back then Prince was very seductive. As we started talking I wasn’t able to stay pissed at him for long and we kept in touch. Sometime later, I was with a friend who was playing Prince’s album. One song caught me. “Ooh, that’s a great song!” I never forgot that song, ‘I Feel For You.’ Several years later, I did a cover of that song and it became one of my biggest hits.”
Chaka’s “Who the hell are you” comment is too funny and it helps to make us smile in the midst of our sadness of losing such a gifted and caring entertainer.
CHAKA PAID BEAUTIFUL HOMAGE TO PRINCE
After the beloved Prince passed away on April 21, 2016, Chaka Khan took to social media to expresses her love for her friend. This is the photo and caption she posted: “I LOVED him. The world LOVED him. Now he’s at peace with his Father. Rest in power @prince, my brother.”
It’s great that Chaka and Prince’s initial meeting went from disastrous, to a lifetime of friendship.
