Cuba Gooding Jr. and his brother Omar Gooding are both successful in their own right. But their knack for entertainment might have been inherited from their parents, Shirley and Cuba Gooding, Sr. both of whom were accomplished singers.
Whenever fans get the opportunity to see them together, they look like a model family – Cuba and his sons. So, it’s quite understandable why most fans would believe the famed actors come from a close-knit family. But, apparently, it wasn’t always a walk in the park for the Gooding family. In fact, Cuba Gooding Jr. revealed he and his father actually have love-hate relationship.
But See How BAD Things REALLY Got & What Their Dad Did…
In a past interview with Vibe Magazine, Cuba- or as we Old Schoolers best know him as, “Tre” from Boyz N’ The Hood opened up about the dramatic changes his family went through when he was a child. His father’s musical success with the 70’s soul group, The Main Ingredient, created quite a comfortable lifestyle for the Gooding fam.’
However, the financial stability didn’t last long, because they actually went living a life of luxury, with housekeepers, expensive whips and a mansion tucked away in an affluent neighborhood, to hitting rock bottom…like hardcore rock BOTTOM:
“We lived in a big house and had chauffeurs. And then in the fifth grade… Bang! Rock bottom,” he said. During those trying times, “there were stretches of being evicted and living in a car, of living on welfare,” Cuba revealed in the interview.
Cuba Gooding Sr. reportedly spent many of their challenging years chasing fame in hopes of reviving his career. The downfall ultimately led to his parents’ divorce.
Turbulent Relationship With His Pops
Cuba lived with his mother and two siblings, but his relationship with his dad suffered. Cuba even described having a “love-hate” relationship with his father. One minute his father would be cursing him out and lashing out. Then, the next minute he’d be telling him how much he loved him. Needless to say, the mixed signals created a strain that’s taken years to fix…
Hello. And Bye.
