Well it turns out that “Mad Dog” could have used and definitely NEEDED an Oscar Degruy in his life! You see, Oscar never strayed away from the core principal of being a former Black Panther, which was trying to get equality for minorities and underprivileged kids, except nowadays his focus isn’t solely on any particular race, but it’s focused on helping young people of all races.
He and his wife, Freddie (who sadly passed away from cancer in 1993) bought a performing arts theater in 1975, that features the art of of step dancing and street dancing, blended together with the Bahá’í principles of equality, racial harmony and unity of religions. By 1995 DeGruy and their team had built over 100 Workshops in the United States and another 100 scattered across 50 other countries.
This video of the Baha’i Youth Workshops gives you some great insight into what Oscar and his late wife, Freddie, started back in ’74.
He also guest starred on a episode of What’s Happening!!

Oscar and Freddie began a Great movement that I was proud to be apart of. It assisted so many of us youth in having something productive to do and to teach the Cause of God and be of service. Thank you for letting me and many others be apart of it. I learned Many lifelong lessons from Oscar ( my Spiritual Father)
Not Really But Carry on!

It’s amazing that the author of this article never watched Good Times and certainly didn’t do research before writing this article. “Mad Dog” is the character that shot JJ, but he is not the character who was famous for saying…Thelma. ..Thelma. ..Thelma! That gentleman was name Poppo and played by Randy Martin. He was one of JJ’s friends and part of the “Awesome Foursome”. The only thing Mad Dog and Poppo had in common was the airfro. Mad Dog was a much taller character and only appeared in the episodes where JJ was shot. Poppo appeared quite often because he was a close friend of JJ and he pursued Thelma whenever he came by. Please get your facts together before writing an article. ..please!

Love love this. Great to see a positive”where are they now” Sometimes the media like to focus on the negative. Would love to see something like this on Unsung or something similar to that show☺

Whenever I see that “Good Times” episode (which is one of my favorites), I still tear up when his mother told him she hated him. The look on his face was priceless. It portrayed the hurt he felt even though he was playing a “tough” guy.

I thought about Mad Dog when I saw Toya Graham going upside her son’s head during the Baltimore riots. MD could’ve used some tough love. Ok, it was just tv, I know. LOL Anyway, Oscar DeGruy’s doing good, giving back to the community. Right on!
