What he (Ali) did was he stood up for a cause in an era where African Americans didn’t stand up for their people and he stood up for a strong cause in his era.

You can see the rest of what he said and where he ranked Ali among the other fighters in the video below…
What Mayweather forgot to mention is that if it weren’t for Ali, not only would he not have a boxing legend to thank for giving him his own cocky, confident, and outspoken persona, but that his own daddy, Floyd Mayweather Sr., would not have had a great role model to look up to. Floyd Sr. taught his son what he learned from Ali, so instead of Floyd Jr. just paying homage to his Pops and even his uncle Roger Maywether, maybe he should be directing a lot of that credit where it is so rightfully due- to Ali.
When Mayweather implied that Ali is only the greatest because he stood up for a “cause,” I almost fell out of my chair! Maybe he should take notes if that’s all he considers Ali to be the greatest for, because the last time I checked, Floyd has never publicly stood up for anything, nor risked is life, his freedom, or his livelihood for any cause, other than himself. So it’s disrespectful to judge a boxer who did something that Floyd himself would otherwise either be terrified to do, or simply could care less about.
We’re covering this now because when Floyd first made some shady comments about Ali some months ago, we just thought his thought process was off and we gave him a pass, but now that he’s still going, we wanted to give some respect to Ali and his legacy. We’re not the only ones though. See how Mike Tyson and Ali’s daughter, Laila Ali, responded to Mayweather’s outlook on Ali…
Floyd is a helluva of boxer, but probably more importantly is that he and his team are helluva strategists, which is also a much needed necessity in the art of boxing. One of Floyd’s most recent strategies is also one of his greatest criticisms in the history of his career, and that is…
He gave a fair assessment. He was asked about who he considered as the greatest boxer, not who he considered as a great humanitarian. Although he was cocky, he gave props to Muhammad Ali. He kept it real.
I see what you’re saying Action411, but to me it just seems like Mayweather’s a lil’ too cocky when it comes to his view on Ali, because I’ve never heard him actually acknowledge the fact that he got his boxing persona from Ali, nor that Ali has actually knocked out some top notch boxers in his career, unlike Mayweather. True Mayweather has won more, but he should also consider the comparison between some (not all) of the fighters he’s fought versus some of the ones Ali has fought and won by knockout (not by technical knockout). I personally think Mayweather is an impeccable fighter and I’m a fan of his work, but again, like we stated in the article, he’s definitely entitled to his own opinion, I just wish he would show a tad bit more respect for the man who paved the way for him to put his foot through the door. Thanks for giving us your take on this.
