his duck-dodge-and-run-around-the-ring strategy that he implemented for the Manny Pacquiao fight. Now don’t get me wrong, Floyd obviously outsmarted Pacquiao by executing his run-away strategy, and landing a few more punches in the midst of running around the ring, but he also lost a lot of respect from his fans because that particular strategy put him in a position where he didn’t actually stand there and do what he and Pacquiao were there to do, which is box.
I definitely recall Ali’s style of boxing as dancing around the ring to avoid punches (which is probably where Mayweather learned it from), but Ali always at some point in each of his matches, stopped dancing and actually stood toe to toe to box his opponent, unlike what Mayweather did in his fight against Pacquiao. When Mayweather starts actually creating strategies (not just mostly incorporating other boxers’ strategies into his own) like Ali’s ‘Rope-A-Dope’; and not just winning, but actually knocking out some of the greatest boxing legends in history, then I’ll say that he has a tiny bit of right to maybe say some of the things he’s saying, although I still think he should NEVER disrespect the man who paved the way for him. That’s just like how there’s no way to pay homage to President Barack Obama without paying homage to Harriet Tubman.
Mayweather built his career on the back of Ali but never mistake it, he will never be worth more than Ali- trust me, with the legacy Ali built, his worth will be even greater long after he’s gone from this earth. In other words, it’s not the amount of fights you’ve won, it’s the amount of memorable wars you’ve put on display for the people.
In a nutshell, Ali is ranked the the greatest of all time because he’s a great fighter and a great person…again, maybe you should take notes Floyd. Being a better person doesn’t mean just posting videos on social media about how bad your woman is, how much superficial stuff you draped her in, and how many expensive cars and trinkets you bought this week, it’s about being dedicated to your craft (which Floyd is, I will definitely give him that) and being a better fighter on the outside of the ring too- a feat that not many fighters have been able to accomplish, especially not on the level of Ali…just saying.
Bottom line is this- Floyd has a right to pay homage to whichever fighter he wants- it’s a free country, but all I’m saying is he needs to be more considerate of what Ali has actually done for him and no matter what angle you look at from, he needs to be more respectful with his words and his thoughts on Muhammad Ali in my humble opinion.
He gave a fair assessment. He was asked about who he considered as the greatest boxer, not who he considered as a great humanitarian. Although he was cocky, he gave props to Muhammad Ali. He kept it real.
I see what you’re saying Action411, but to me it just seems like Mayweather’s a lil’ too cocky when it comes to his view on Ali, because I’ve never heard him actually acknowledge the fact that he got his boxing persona from Ali, nor that Ali has actually knocked out some top notch boxers in his career, unlike Mayweather. True Mayweather has won more, but he should also consider the comparison between some (not all) of the fighters he’s fought versus some of the ones Ali has fought and won by knockout (not by technical knockout). I personally think Mayweather is an impeccable fighter and I’m a fan of his work, but again, like we stated in the article, he’s definitely entitled to his own opinion, I just wish he would show a tad bit more respect for the man who paved the way for him to put his foot through the door. Thanks for giving us your take on this.
