George Clinton Spent 3Million & Refuses To End Fight w/Record Label

George Clinton

Clinton is determined to win…not necessarily for himself, he says, but for his heirs and band-mates. Clinton is happy, healthy and active because he kicked a three-decade addiction to crack cocaine – which he sees as a major step toward his win.

Clinton on his continued legal battle against the labels:
[quote_box_center]“We’re fighting against all of these copyright issues. Fighting all of these court cases had completely drained me physically. I had fun catching them (the lawyers) off guard because they were thinking I was still a crack-head! (laughing) It worked. I feel good. I look good. I’ve lost about 85 pounds.”[/quote_box_center]

Jodie Griffin, an attorney at the nonprofit Internet and copyright organization Public Knowledge, said that the music industry “is a system designed to favor the more powerful, better informed, more lawyered party, which is almost always the record label.” But that’s not stopping Mr. Clinton…this brotha is still fighting.

George Clinton So where is it right now? Clinton said…

“It’s coming up to the Supreme Court. I’ve been paying lawyers so much money for years. I’ve spent over $3 million dollars on this, and I’m not going to stop until I win. I have to keep fighting. I will continue to fight because there have been about 30 members of the band who have never received royalties from our music when it’s used in commercials and movies. They (the companies who have claimed money that Clinton says belongs to him) are trying to keep it quiet because hip-hop is a successful genre of music and funk is part of the DNA of hip-hop.”

[quote_box_center]“I (George Clinton) want to be known as the man who brought to the attention of America the copyright issues. That’s what I would like my legacy to be, to have turned people on to the fact that they need to fight for the rights to their music.”[/quote_box_center]

Okay this is a problem we hear all too often with many artists, but I think one of the most disturbing factors about this is that sadly, some of our favorite Old School artists, who are supposed to be kicking back in the shade, with a glass of lemonade and enjoying their golden years right now, are instead having to spend them fighting for a piece of what’s rightfully theirs. These artists have given us so much through their music over the years, it’s only fair that they have the respect be shown to them through fair financial compensation. We’re not saying that these record labels don’t deserve their share, but they deserve their FAIR share, not necessarily the ENTIRE share of what these artists have created, in our humble opinion. We commend George Clinton for vowing to never give up on that fight.
