This brotha is a singer, just like his Dad, and he’s becoming a Youtube sensation.
Here are a few hints; his is a trend setter, and was dominating R&B radio stations for a while in the 80’s.
If you were jammin’ to 80’s R&B back in the day, chances are you probably liked at least one of his father’s songs.
Take a good look at this man and see if you can figure out who his Dad is…many folks say he and his Daddy look a lot alike. By the way, if this guy looks familiar to you, it may be because he was a contestant on American Idol a few years ago, pursuing his dream to be a professional singer just like his Pops.
Morris Day’s Son
If you guessed Morris Day a.k.a. “Mr. I’m So Cool (Cool!)” of The Time (now known as The Original 7ven) give yourself and Old School high five and a pat on the back, because you’re good at this!
After the show, Derran continued to sing and write music for his 2 man group and has built an online following of his own. He and his group member perform regularly and they do a lot of cover songs…I think they oftentimes sound way better than the original versions of the songs their covering by some of the biggest artists in the music game…go figure.
Derran is the youngest son of Morris and Morris’s ex-wife, Judith Day. Morris was married to Judy for about 25 years and they had three children together. Judith is another reason why singing is in Derran’s blood- she is a singer too! Judith Day was the background singer for Lou Rawls back in the day and she also co-wrote songs with Morris several times.
Now for those of you ILOSM ladies out there who may find yourselves staring a lil’ bit longer than normal at Derran’s photos (LOL), it’s okay, you’re not being a cradle robber, Derran is 26 years old, so he’s a legal, grown man now.
Back to Derran Day’s music though- the dude definitely can SANG! We know it’s typically very difficult for the offspring of music legends to carve a name in music for themselves, but it looks like Derran has a pretty good shot at doing just that and we wish there were more REAL artists like him on mainstream radio today.
