Monica Calhoun is best known for her roles in “The Best Man,” “The Best Man Holiday,” “The Players Club” and if we really wanna go back, old schoolers probably remember her from the “CBS School Break Special” that she earned her an Emmy nom’ in 1993. But here is what Monica is not known for and it shocked the hell outta us, here at ILOSM- she can sing…like really SANG! Who woulda thought it, right?!!
We located a video clip of Monica singing her heart out in the 2005 stage play, “Friends & Lovers,” where she played the lead role of “Debra” a pregnant mother who’s husband was suddenly killed. The clip is a lil’ foggy, but her vocals are crystal clear…check it out below…

“I auditioned for the school of arts, I could only pick one major, so I picked theater. […] But during that time, even though I was doing theater in high school, I was in a choir with H.E. Barnum and we were traveling everywhere…doing shows here and there. […] And because of H.B.’s relationships, I did session work with Jeffrey Osborne, Donna Summer, Quincy Jones, and Stevie Wonder.”
Monica Calhoun is still getting her acting on though and she will be featured in the upcoming BET New Edition biopic movie, “The New Edition Story,” where she will play Ralph Tresvant’s mother, Patricia Tresvant. Below is a photo of Ralph with his mother back in the day…
The other actresses who will portray the mothers of New Edition are:
- LaLa Anthony as Yvette Nicole Brown
- Yvette Nicole Brown as Michael Bivins’ mother Shirley Bivins
- Lisa Nicole Carson as Ricky Bell’s mother Mae Bell
- Sandi McCree as Bobby Brown’s mother Carole Brown
When Monica isn’t working, she’s fulfilled with her main passion in life and that is hanging with her special needs teen son, whom she loves to death. We can’t wait to see Monica in the N.E. movie and we’ll keep our fingers crossed that she’ll decide to sing again one day.
