Magic Johnson’s and his wife, Cookie’s, son, E.J. Johnson, has been causing more than a few stares and conversation in recent years due to his flamboyant style of dress and his comfortability in his own skin as a gay man. Today at 24 years old, E.J. couldn’t be more happy with himself and he has his parents to thank largely for that.

Magic and Cookie recently revealed on “The Steve Harvey Show” what their true thoughts were upon learning that E.J. was a gay man. They had two very different experiences with his coming out. Cookie was okay with E.J.’s sexuality from day one, but Magic on the other hand, had a bit of a struggle at first.

Magic’s process evolved from denial, to trying to change E.J. into more of a manly kid, to understanding and embracing his son for who he is no matter what.

Magic also revealed to Anderson Cooper what he felt about Christians who come at him because they disagree with his son’s sexuality:

It’s wonderful that E.J. has had the unconditional love and support of those who matter the most to him- his mom, his dad, his sister, Elisa, and his big brother, Andre. With that type of love, he can conquer the world regardless of how much scrutiny he faces every time he steps out of his door as a gay male.

This is just another reminder that we cannot always foresee what our children will become, nor will we be able to control who they truly are, I think that all we can do as parents, is love them unconditionally, attempt to guide them with our  wisdom, train them to be good people on the inside and hope that as they grow older they’ll never forget those lessons- regardless of if they’re gay, bisexual, or straight.

We tip our hats to Magic, Cookie, and E.J., for being so open about their relationship; and to Cookie and Magic for their honesty about the shock, denial, and ultimately their acceptance of their son. They understand that not everyone will agree with who E.J. is, but they clearly don’t give a damn about what anyone thinks and that’s a beautiful thing.

The Johnson’s will definitely help (and possibly save the life of) a young person out there who may be struggling right now with how to come to terms with their sexuality. So again, major props to the Johnson fam.’
