In a recent interview with People, Mary admits that she’s in a very good place after her 13 year marriage to Kendu finally came to an end. And she’s even grown wiser overall during her 25 year career:
“If I could tell my younger self something, I would tell her don’t be afraid of your imperfections, because one day people are going to love you for them.”
When discussing her split from Kendu, Mary admitted she’s just now starting to feel like herself again, and it all began last year:
“I think I turned that corner when I got my divorce. I think that I realized that no matter what comes to me, no matter how big or bad it is, I have to keep moving, I have to keep living. I said, ‘No, I’m not going to stay in this marriage. I’m out of here.’ That’s what thriving is about.”
Through it all, Mary has learned that she doesn’t need a man, or anyone else, to define her happiness:
“I learned to be happy with just Mary, just enjoying my own company, me by myself most of the time. I’m grateful.”
Next up: Mary will be performing as the headliner for the Essence Festival in New Orleans. After that, she’s headed on tour with Nas! I’m going, are you? Check out Mary’s tour dates here.
