MC Lyte may be “Lyte as a rock” in physical stature…but when it comes to the part she says she played in her divorce from ex, husband, John Wyche, her role wasn’t so light after all…according to her.
MC Lyte’s Confession
The 52-year-rap legend recently participated in a panel discussion at the “MusiCares Humans of Hip Hop” event in June 2024. During the convo’ Lyte was asked to recall a time in her life where she felt she had to “tap in” in order to be more present in a particular situation. That’s when Lyte made the confessions about her prior marriage/divorce:
MC Lyte- “A time where I needed to tap in… was at the brink of a divorce. It was, ‘What was my part in this?’ Just claiming responsibility and realizing that I wasn’t really present as I thought I was.”
MC Lyte continued:
“At that point, I have to do self-inventory. I’ve got to check what’s holding me back. What are the things that I need to take a look at… Being able to empathize and listen to what’s actually happening with people was one of the main factors that I needed to tap into and become aware of how listening is loving…
Not just my marriage with him didn’t work; any marriage wouldn’t have worked because I needed to work on me.”
In a prior interview with Essence, the “Cha Cha Cha” MC admitted that she was “distraught” soon after she and John decided to divorce:
“I think in the very beginning I was very distraught. I feel like there are phases whenever a relationship is ending whether you’re married or not. It’s that first phase of, ‘Oh my God, I’ve got to make this work for us’. Then it’s like, ‘Oh my God I’ve got to make this work for everybody else involved. The family, if there are children, people who flew all the way to wherever to see you married.’” – MC Lyte
Lyte and John Wyche –a Marine Corp vet and entrepreneur– reportedly met on the dating site, Match.com, married in 2017, and she filed for divorce in 2020, although it took a few years for their divorce to be finalized.
MC Lyte Denounces Claims That Her Divorce Was A “Battle”
In January 2023, Lyte took to Instagram to set the record straight about her divorce, her ex, and her assets:
“My divorce was not a battle. My ex-husband, John Wyche, has never attempted to take any assets from me at any time before, during or after our marriage. Anything that is written or said that states or implies otherwise is untrue and unfair. I do not agree with or support anything that aims to secure clicks and views by crafting slanted messaging at the expense of the reputation of innocent parties.” – MC Lyte
Her Divorce/Marriage Advice To Others
She then shared a few “lessons” about divorce with her followers:
“Since this matter appears to be of concern to so many, I will use this moment to share a few lessons:
1. Divorce does not equal failure. We did not fail; it simply did not work. I pray for his well-being as I do my own and I wish him nothing but God’s choicest blessings.2. If you have anything to protect going into a marriage, get a prenuptial agreement so there’s no confusion if it comes to an end. As a matter of fact, make sure you protect all of your assets with proper insurance, financial and estate planning. Our people are far behind the wealth gap; get a financial education and do what is in your power to protect what God has blessed you with.
3. Focus on love and truth. Be careful what you say or imply about others. No one is perfect and we all have something that we need grace to cover. With all of the mental health crises we are facing as a human race, my prayer is that we will see more commonalities of heart among each other and less judgment.” – MC Lyte

She’s seen found a new man, Aaron Johnson, who’s reportedly a tech industry professional.
On a side-note…one person MC Lyte might not wanna get marital advice from in the near future is her reported best friend (whom she refers to as her “sister”), Jada Pinkett-Smith. I joke, I joke…I kid, I kid 😏. Jada and Will Smith’s marriage may be hangin’ on by a thread (as they have now both admitted in so many words), but hey, whatever makes them happy is their biz.’ Anywho…
