Tina Turner was the original choice! Turner was offered the role in The Color Purple, but turned it down because she was not ready for a dramatic role, and the traumas the character faces in the film are too similar to real incidents involving her father and her ex-husband, Ike Turner, as she mentioned in an 1985 interview for KNT News Service.
”Acting is what I want to finish my life with,” says Tina. She has appeared in a several other roles and her last acting role was in the TV show, ALLY MCBEAL in 2000. So what’s the back-story on her turning down that magical role in The Color Purple?
The producer of the film, Quincy Jones had allegedly scheduled Tina Turner a meeting with the director but she reportedly flipped out on him. According to sources, she said: “I wouldn’t do a black picture if I was dying! It took me twenty years to get out of that black shit and I ain’t going back!” Quincy was so shocked, reportedly, he couldn’t open his mouth, but Quincy also said…
Well Tina…..is would had be a great role for you!!!

Glad she turned it down!

Even though she didn’t sing in the movie, she did a wonderful job. It was Tina’s loss.

I despise those who shun the very people who admire them and make them who they are.
