Before Cherry filed her lawsuit in Los Angeles, though, Hill’s lawyer Peter Haviland entered his own lawsuit in New York that claimed that “Judith is an independent artist, not bound by contract to anyone.” The suit also alleges that Cherry purposefully conspired against Hill by planting a story to outlets like TMZ that the singer had recorded a love song dedicated to North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un at the height of The Interview fiasco.
Hill’s suit states that Sony Music cut ties with Cherry’s company The Cherry Party – which in turn severed their contract with Hill – and that, soon after, Cherry sent out a strange email to Hill’s manager saying she was “sick of the music business and all of its trash” before taking an extended “leave of absence.”
“Judith Hill was and is absolutely free to perform her music as she has done,” Haviland says in a statement to Rolling Stone, adding that Cherry’s countersuit was “nothing but a publicity stunt.
“It is a shame that Prince has been dragged into this insanity,” Haviland says. “But Judith Hill will not be deterred from performing her music by the likes of some Jolene Cherry.

The main question I have is why is this producer going after Prince, when the issue seems to be with her former artist, Judith Hill? Prince made zero dollars off of the free album, Judith apparently was no longer Cherry’s artist at the time of the recordings based on what her attorneys are saying, and Prince was never under any legal obligation to producer, Jolene Cherry. I smell a rat here.
What do you think ILOSM fam?’ Should the producer be going after Prince’s money, or her former artist, Judith Hill?
Like we mentioned earlier, Judith Hill is the former background singer for Michael Jackson who was featured on the MJ documentary, “This Is It.” See a video clip of she and Michael Jackson rehearsing a duet together just before his passing…
Why Prince needs to stay close to God and leave that industry alone …

Judith was also in the Academy Award winning 2013 doc 20 Feet From Stardom. I loved that movie. It’s a must see if you love old school music and unsung talent. Judith is an amazing singer so it’s sad to see someone clearly out for the money attacking her and of course Prince. Smh
I agree Jay, Judith is a great singer and I wish her much success. I also thought it was kind of weird that Judith’s former producer was going after Prince because if what Judith’s lawyer is saying is actually true, Judith was not contractually obligated to that producer, nor anyone else during the time that those recordings were created. Only time will tell though.

I really don’t see what damages can be claimed if the recordings were given away. If the album is good, that should make the next one worth even more. How do you prove losses on free goods? If Sony is saying giving away music is damaging the worth of the artist, then why do they allow their recordings to be streamed for next to nothing?
