The world of R&B is mourning the loss of one of our icons. Frankie Beverly, the soulful voice behind timeless hits with his group Maze, has passed away at 77 years old. His family has spoken out, offering details surrounding his passing.
Frankie passed away on Monday, September 10, 2024. The following day, Sept. 11, his family announced the news on Instagram, with an emotional message:
“FROM THE FAMILY OF FRANKIE BEVERLY … Grieving the loss of a loved one is a deeply personal and emotional experience. During this time, as we are navigating feelings of sorrow, reflection, and remembrance we kindly ask for privacy and understanding, allowing us the space to grieve in our own way. This period for is one of healing, and your respect for our need for solitude is appreciated as we honor the memory of our beloved Howard Stanley Beverly known to the world as Frankie Beverly.
He lived his life with pure soul as one would say, and for us, no one did it better. He lived for his music, family and friends. Love one another as he would want that for us all.

For decades, Frankie’s voice was the soundtrack to Black joy, love, and celebration. From backyard cookouts, to family reunions…his smooth sound connected generations. Songs like “Before I Let Go” became anthems that stood the test of time, resonating with fans of all ages.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, Beverly’s journey into music started early. He formed Maze in the 1970s, and together they crafted a sound that was equal parts smooth R&B and funky soul. Their music became an undeniable staple in the Black community, making them one of the most beloved bands in R&B history. From “Joy and Pain” to “Happy Feelin’s,” every track Beverly touched became a hit. His ability to capture the essence of life’s highs and lows through his lyrics and melodies was unmatched.
Beverly’s passing marks the end of an era, but his legacy will forever live on through his music. His soulful voice and authentic sound shaped the foundation of R&B, paving the way for future artists while keeping the essence of Black music alive.
