Sad news to report today I Love Old School Music family…R&B legend, Angela Bofill, has just passed away at the age of 70 years young. The family and manager of Angela –who’s known for hits, such as “I Try,” “Under The Moon And Over the Sky,” and “This Time Will Be Sweeter,” just to name a few– made the announcement that she died today (Friday, June 14, 2024).
Statement From Angela Bofill’s Loved Ones
Richard Engel, Angela’s friend/manager made the following statement on Facebook, regarding Angela’s passing:
“ON BEHALF OF MY DEAR FRIEND ANGIE, I AM SADDENED TO ANNOUNCE HER PASSING ON THE MORNING OF JUNE 13TH. THE FUNERAL WILL BE HELD AT ST. DOMINCKS CHURCH IN VALEJO CA. ON JUNE 28TH AT 1:00pm.”
Throughout recent years, there’d been false reports of Angela’s passing. So, this time fans were confused as to whether or not she’d actually passed away. Rich eventually re-confirmed that this time, it was unfortunately true. He also thanked fellow music legends, Melba Moore and Maysa Leak, for making the initial announcements online about Angela’s death:
“JUST TO CLEAR UP THE CONFUSION. ON BEHALF OF SHAUNA BOFILL, HUSBAND CHRIS PORTUGUESE, WE ARE SADDENED BUT MUST REPORT THAT THE PASSING OF ANGELA YESTERDAY IS INDEED TRUE. WE THANK MELBA MOORE AND MAYSA FOR THEIR EARLY CONDOLENCES. THANKs FOR YOUR MANY POST
RICH ENGEL friend and Manager.”
The Debilitating Health Condition Angela Bofill Strongly Battled For Years
Although Angela Bofill’s manager hasn’t yet released a cause of death, we do know that she’d proven just how strong she was as she battled a crippling health condition ever since 2006.
As we’ve previously reported, in 2006 Angela suffered a stroke, which she was recovering from at that time. But in 2007 a second stroke struck the songstress, leaving her paralyzed on her left side. The stroke also took her beautiful alto-toned voice and affected her speech, causing her to speak in somewhat choppy patterns.
One thing the strokes couldn’t take was Angela Bofill’s positive, humorous personality and her fighter spirit. She refused to feel sorry for herself, and in 2010 she and her manager, Rich, created “The Angela Bofill Experience,” which was a concert that Angela skillfully narrated with interesting, funny stories about her life; while her band and her musician/singer friends, such as Freddie Jackson, Will Downing, Maysa Leak, Melba Moore, Phil Perry, and others, sing her hit songs.
The fans, as well as Angela LOVED it. And she once said this in an interview about “The Angela Bofill Experience”:
“Any time a crowd comes to see me, I’m surprised. No sing no more and still people come [to see me perform]. Wow. Impressed.” – Angela Bofill
Although her speech pattern may have been somewhat choppy in the above statement, we all understood and appreciated everything she had to say. This songstress was the epitome of a fighter. We thank her for the beautiful classics she’s left for us to enjoy and honor her memory with. Angela Bofill, rest in eternal peace queen…it is well-deserved.
