Earlier this year the highly controversial documentary Surviving R. Kelly debuted on Lifetime. As the documentary unfolded the details surrounding Kelly’s private life were shocking and disturbing. However, the most horrific revelations came from ex-wife Drea Kelly. Giving the audience a multitude of emotions Drea recounted the pain and abuse she suffered at the hands of Kelly during their thirteen year marriage. Their tumultuous relationship is still very much fractured years after their divorce, and now she’s ready to share her story with the world as a cast member of WE tv’s hit series Growing Up Hip Hop: Atlanta.
The Pain Is Still There
When Drea first met R. Kelly she was enamored with his talent and believed that she had met the love of her life. Unfortunately she had no idea what she was in for. The many tales she revealed over the course of the six episodes in the Surviving R. Kelly series were very grim. It spoke wholeheartedly of a tale between a man hiding many demons and a woman who wanted to love him beyond his pain. Prior to the documentary’s airing Drea spoke about she and Kelly’s tense marriage on The View in October of last year (at the 1:44 mark)

Hearing her speak about the abuse she suffered at the hands of her ex-husband is heartbreaking. And Drea decided to tell this story before the rest of the world understood how manipulative R. Kelly really was. Now, Drea is ready to share more of her story to help inspire other women who may not be able to speak up for themselves.
