A news release from the James Brown Family Foundation confirmed Venisha Brown’s death. She was 53.
Venisha Brown died on Wednesday, at Augusta University Health Medical Center, due to complications with pneumonia.
Just like her famous father, Venisha was a talented songwriter and musician. She kept her father’s memory alive by becoming heavily involved in the family’s foundation. Venisha’s half-sister Yamma Brown posted an emotional message on Instagram. It showed the pair in happier times at a hockey rink.
“My beautiful big sis Venisha has received her angels wings…my heart is broken but I am comforted by the peace you now have!!!” Yamma wrote. “I love you sis.”
She Suffered With Addiction

Venisha was born in California and attended Hollywood High School, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. She would stay with her superstar dad each summer and eventually moved to live with him in Georgia in ’97.
Her half-sister told to the paper that Venisha “struggled with addiction, which most people know, a lot of her adult life.” But her Godfather of Soul father “was her support structure for a lot of years.” Brown died on Christmas Day in 2006. But before her death, her sister insists Venisha had overcome her demons.
Meanwhile the James Brown Family Foundation thanked everyone for their “prayers and telephone calls,” but asked for privacy at this difficult time.
They are asking for donations to the James Brown Academy of Musik Pupils, designed for the youth to discover their musical ability, instead of flowers.
The family would like Venisha to be remembered as the person “who fully embodied the dance moves of her father.”
