If you’re somewhat confused because you could have sworn that there as already one, or two, or three…or even four, Prince tributes throughout the past 5 months (almost 6) since the beloved Purple One departed this earth on August 21st, don’t be alarmed, your mind ain’t playing tricks on you because it’s true, there have been several Prince tributes by his family and friends. But this last one that just took place, was the end all be all- the one that Prince’s family held for the public and it was absolutely BEAUTIFUL!
The tribute was held at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn., right next door to the city where Prince lived in Chanhassen, Minn. Thousands of people turned out and a bunch of celebs showed up and showed out for a celebration that lasted about 5 hours straight!
Prince’s band, The New Power Generation, played most of the night as Prince’s friends, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Morris Day & The Time, Mint Condition, Bilal, and so many more sang.
Even Prince’s very first bandmate from back in the day, Andre Cymone, performed and lit that building up with his guitar riffs.
Doug E. Fresh got the crowd hype like no other as the whole place uplifted in celebration of Prince’s life…
Stevie broke down toward the end as “Purple Rain” played and Prince’s voice rang out throughout the venue. Chaka tore it up as usual on stage, Bilal sang in falsetto like only Bilal can while doing Prince’s songs justice. Prince’s ex-wife Mayte Garcia got her belly dancing on and singer, Luke James also held his own.
There were reviews by some media outlets that said singers, Jessie J., Nicole Scherzinger, and Tori Kelly didn’t fair as well as come of the other heavy hitter performers of the night did, but they still got an A for effort, because let’s face it, covering a Prince song has never been an easy task.
