In case you didn’t know by now Stephanie Mills may be small in stature, standing 4’9″…but she has a BIG personality and ain’t afraid to speak her mind. That’s also one of the reasons why we think she should do more interviews, because they’re usually entertaining, even when we may disagree with her point of view. Anyways, Ms. Mills had a lot to say about Brian McKnight in a past interview. See why she called him disrespectful…

Not only did Stephanie have a few words for Brian McKnight, but she had a lil’ something to say about Erykah Badu and other artists too. Tell us if you agree with what she’s saying here…

STEPHANIE MILLS: BRIAN McKNIGHT “STARVED FOR ATTENTION”

In a past interview with Huffington Post, Stephanie Mills revealed this:

“I found that song [Brian McKnight’s “Show Me How Your Pu**y Works”] disrespectful. I just don’t think you have to go that far to get attention. And I think sometimes the older artists — because he is older now — the older artists are so starved for attention that they’ll just about do anything. And I come from the school of when they taught you how to sit and do interviews and taught you how to walk into a room. There was so much training during the time that I came through that we would never think of doing anything like that. So I think it took away from all of the classiness and the great stuff that he has done before.”

MILLS WASN’T FOND OF ERYKAH’S NAKEDNESS EITHER

In regards to Erykah Badu’s 2010 “Window Seat” video, Stephanie wasn’t feelin’ that either:

“It’s just like when Erykah Badu took off all of her clothes. I was like, ‘It’s just so unnecessary to do that!’ I love Erykah Badu, but I think sometimes they want to do the shock value thing, but I don’t think it always works for black artists the way that it works for white artists,” said Mills.

ILOSM family, do y’all agree with Stephanie Mills on this, or no?

Stephanie Mills

A while back Stephanie Mills did an interview with radio personality, Egypt, on Atlanta’s V103. She talked about several things, but the most shocking of it all was what rapper she said she was crushin’ on big time! Scroll down to see who he is…

Who’s Her Crush?

Embed from Getty Images

Stephanie Mills was crushin’ on none other than the late, great TUPAC SHAKUR! That’s who Stephanie said she would have loved to date back in the day! Can you believe that?!! Here’s what she said:

STEPHANIE: My favorite- my all favorite time rapper is Tupac. See I could have been Tupac’s girlfriend.

EGYPT: Stephanie… wait, stop stop stop stop. Stephanie Mills just said she could have been Tupac’s girlfriend. I’m done.

STEPHANIE: You know I could’ve. I love Tupac. Oh my God yeah.

Okay here’s the question: What would it have been like had Stephanie actually dated ‘Pac? We put together this fun, hypothetical list of a few bumps in the road that we think that relationship would have faced:

1. Stephanie would have had to probably fight Madonna over him. Yep, Pac was dating Madonna in the ’90s. Madonna just confirmed their relationship in recent years on the “Howard Stern Show.”

2. Quincy Jones’s daughter, Kidada Jones, wouldn’t have been too happy if Stephanie and Tupac would’ve hooked up. As most of you all already know, Kidada was dating Tupac at the time of his death, and she had his face tattooed on her arm…now, that’s love on a whole ‘notha level right there.

Tupac and his then-wife, Keisha Morris

3. Stephanie Mills and Kidada would have had to also deal with Keisha Morris. Keisha was Pac’s wife up until just 3 months prior to his passing. She’s not in the entertainment industry, and most people didn’t find out about her until after Pac died. Turns out, ‘Pac got married to Keisha in August of ’95 while he was imprisoned. Their marriage was annulled 10 months later in June of 1996 (after Pac was released from prison). Sadly, just three months later, in September of ’96, ‘Pac was tragically killed. Keisha said Tupac always told her that he didn’t want her to be thrown into the drama surrounding him, so they agreed to end their marriage.

4. Overall, Stephanie Mills would have probably had to be a ride-or-die-chick, which is something that totally does not fit the mold of the classy lady we all know Ms. Mills to be.

Simply put, a relationship between Stephanie Mills and Tupac would’ve likely been an oil-and-water type of blend.

‘Pac was like an updated version of Gil Scott-Heron when it came to his music – very wise, real, and controversial lyrical content. However, with the ladies in his life, ‘Pac seemed more like Prince, or maybe even basketball legend, Wilt Chamberlain…well, maybe not Wilt (and his infamous 20,000-women sex claim)…but you all get my point.

On the flip side, Stephanie seemed like she was always a good girl, so the only thing she probably could have done for ‘Pac in regards to a relationship, was use the 14 year age difference that she had over ‘Pac, to calm him down and offer him wisdom about life. Stephanie’s still got it though – beautiful voice, beautiful face, curves and all, and she’s making 64 look like the new 44!

Stephanie Mills and Phylicia Rashad

When it comes to Phylicia Rashad’s Bill-Cosby-tweet controversy and the rumors that her current position as the dean of Howard University was in jeopardy as a result, we knew it was only a matter of time before the ever-so-outspoken R&B legend, Stephanie Mills, was gonna weigh in. And she went in hard.

RECAP OF WHAT SPARKED MILLS’ AND OTHERS’ SUPPORT OF PHYLICIA RASHAD

In case you haven’t been privy to what went down in these social media streets over the past week, former The Cosby Show star, Rashad, caught the attention of many with her supportive tweet on Bill Cosby’s release from prison. On Wednesday, Phylicia Rashad tweeted, “FINALLY!!!! A terrible wrong is being righted- a miscarriage of justice is corrected!”, along with a photo of Cosby.

Soon after Rashad’s tweet went viral, many supporters stood up for her; while her opposers called for her termination from her newly appointed role as dean of Howard University, where she is an alumni.

Howard University initially released a statement stating, “Survivors of sexual assault will always be our first priority. … While Dean Rashad has acknowledged in her follow-up tweet that victims must be heard and believed, her initial tweet lacked sensitivity towards survivors of sexual assault. .. Personal positions of University leadership do not reflect Howard University’s policies.”

Though Howard seemed to still support Rashad, rumors have since surfaced of her possible termination, yet have not been confirmed by either party. This is where Stephanie Mills enters the convo’…

STEPHANIE MILLS’S CALLS OUT HOWARD UNIVERSITY, STANDS UP FOR RASHAD

Bill Cosby and Phylicia Rashad

The “Feel Good” songstress didn’t bite her tongue one bit when she addressed Howard University on the ‘termination’ rumors. She did so in a I-wish-they-WOULD-try-Phylicia-Rashad type of way. In her online post, Mills called out Howard U. for accepting thousands of dollars in funding from Bill Cosby throughout the years, basically stating that if they attempt to fire Phylicia over her Cosby tweet, then they should equally ‘attempt’ to give back every dime (as in millions of them) Cosby has ever given to their establishment as well:

iamstephaniemills – I love you @phyliciarashad ❤️❤️❤️. If it’s true that Howard University wants to terminate her Position because they feel her comments about Mr. Cosby were insensitive, then they should give back the millions of dollars that he donated to the university.

Peep what many said in response to Ms. Mills’ statement below.

FANS REACT TO MILLS’S STATEMENT

@dress_dc: Everybody needs a rider like you 👏🏽💪🏽

@brian.r*****: Exactly if they don’t want anything to do with him, make sure you clear yourself of anything ever given to you by him. Free yourself! ❤️❤️❤️

@_sdot******: I bet you they won’t give back all of the money that was donated over the years.

@lady****: Everyone has a right to their own opinion and she said her’s I don’t think they need to take her Position away ❤️

@mizzc*****: Precisely so… they can’t have it both ways!

@coach_p*****: I’ve been saying they should have give that man his million dollars back. They took his name off of a college or something in there they had so give him his millions that he donated… PERIOD

Welp…Stephanie Mills has spoken…and so have her fans.

Stephanie Mills

Here at I Love Old School Music, we love us some Stephanie Mills. Not only because she could sing circles around many of these new R&B singers heads today, but also because she’s one of the realest music legends to ever grace the game. So real, in fact, that she has no qualms about letting folks get a sneak peak into her dating life. Well, she lets them in on the throwback era of her dating life, not necessarily the current era.

Anywho, we’ll take what we can get. That brings us to the recent social media post she shared where she revealed that her childhood “boyfriend” is a legend in his own right…and nope, we’re not talking about Stephanie’s other ex, Michael Jackson. This go ’round, we’re referring to a Hollywood legend, who first became widely known from his work in Spike Lee’s joints back in the day. He was a dominant force on the screen then, and fast forward to today, he’s proven to be a very versatile and dominant force on camera now. Y’all already know the drill ILOSM fam’…get your scroll-on below, to check out who Stephanie Mills’ boyfriend once was…

Stephanie Mills’s Childhood “Boyfriend” Is…

Ms. Mills recently announced that she and actor, Giancarlo Esposito, were childhood sweethearts. In her post, Stephanie Mills shared a way-back-when photo of herself rockin’ two plaited ponytails, a ruffled dress, and a non-smile next to her then-boyfriend, Giancarlo, who was decked out in his suit and bowtie, smiling ear-to-ear…

Actor, Giancarlo Esposito, and singer, Stephanie Mills, as “boyfriend and girlfriend”

She captioned the above photo with the following message:

Other comments were from fans encouraging her manager, Amp Harris, to entice Stephanie Mills to get going with a biopic, or autobiographical memoir about her life, after noticing Amp mention to D-Nice that he was pushing to get that done:

ampharris: @dnice bro I am on her to write this book. She keeps pushing back…So do I😂😂😂.

Well alright nah, Ms. Mills! First, it was Giancarlo Esposito…then it was the iconic Michael Jackson. Her dating game was legendary back in the day.

Stephanie Mills

Ever since the release of the documentary “Surviving R. Kelly” aired on LifeTime, many celebrities and fans have shared their opinions on the recent R. Kelly allegations. While some have chosen to silently express their views, the legendary songstress Stephanie Mills chose to speak out on the issue shortly after the documentary released in 2019. We all remember R. Kelly’s now infamous sit-down with Gayle King, where he yelled and scream about how he’d given, “30 years of his career” to everyone throughout the last 2 decades, and that he was innocent of all sex abuse claims against him. Well, soon afterwards, Stephanie Mills responded to his allegations, stating that ‘he should go to jail for what he’s done.’ On the other hand, the songstress did feel it was unjust for radio stations and streaming services to ban R. Kelly’s music.

According to BlackAmericaWeb, Stephanie Mills definitely believes the R & B singer is guilty, but she also believes that his ex-wife, Andrea Kelly, is guilty as well. WOW…now that’s the real scoop!

Ms. Mills went on to say:

“I don’t believe that his music should be muted. And I also believe that the handlers and his ex and his ex-wife and all of that to go to jail, too. You cannot tell me you live in a house with a man and you don’t know what’s going on. That is not true. I don’t believe that. She should go to jail, too. And so should the handlers that helped him”.

Contrary to Stephanie Mills’ viewpoint on this, Andrea Kelly went on the record stating that she was also abused by R. Kelly during her interview on “Surviving R. Kelly,” where she described very cringing details of the abuse she says she experienced while married to the “Bump N’ Grind” crooner:

“It started with yelling and being slapped and grabbed. He chips away at your self-esteem, your ability to even think. You’re just thinking, ‘What do I do to not piss him off’?” she told LifeTime.

Andrea “Drea” Kelly, R. Kelly’s ex-wife/reality TV star

Despite R. Kelly’s arrest and pending sexual abuse trials, many people are torn between whether his music should be banned or not. While some are not able to listen to R. Kelly’s music the same, others feel as though the art of music should not associate with his personal life dealings. Stephanie Mills was in agreeance with this idea, as she felt as that his music shouldn’t be “tied to his alleged crimes.” Black America Web reported:

“Him writing his music has nothing to do with that. Him being an entertainer and a star,” Mills said. “And those parents bringing those children to the show and then allowing him— I have a son; there’s no way I would take my son to a Bruno Mars show, and say ‘OK, Bruno, you can mentor my son. I’m gonna let him stay with you.’ There’s no way.”

It’s unclear if Stephanie Mills feels the documentary should have been released, but she does believe R. Kelly and his ex-wife are guilty.

In case you didn’t know by now Stephanie Mills may be small in stature, standing 4’9″…but she has a BIG personality and ain’t afraid to speak her mind. ILOSM family, do y’all agree with Stephanie Mills on this, or no?

As we all continue to digest the blatant disrespect and disregard that has been shown to Breonna Taylor and her loved ones by the lack of murder charges for the killer cops who murdered her, music legend Stephanie Mills had a few things to get off of her chest about it. Here’s what she posted:

“My prayers for the family. Let’s make this election personal for Breonna! We have to vote these people out of office. Protesting is good, but voting effects what matter. Their money, their power, and their racist acts! #justiceforbreonnataylor”

This isn’t the first time Ms. Mills has spoken out about police brutality in recent years, a while back we reported the following…

In case y’all didn’t already know, listen up: R&B legend, Stephanie Mills, speaks her mind at ALL times, especially when it comes to the preservation of her culture. The beautiful, age-less 4’9″ “I Feel Good” singer did an interview on Sister Circle the other day and covered a wide range of topics, including the industry’s ‘whitewashing’ of R&B music, the Kardashian family, police brutality and Black women with booty injections. Told y’all she keeps it 100, so let’s dig into what she said *scroll down to watch her interview*

Mills On The Whitewashing Of R&B

When singer/Sister Circle co-host, Syleena Johnson, asked Mills what she thought about the current state of music, Ms. Mills did not hesitate to call out music industry execs for deliberately ignoring Black R&B singers and putting a boatload of money into White soul artists, instead:

“I think they want R&B, but they don’t want it from us. … They want it from Adele and Justin Timberlake and those people; they don’t want it from us,” said Mills. She later added that the industry doesn’t “want to show the respect of where it comes from.”

Ms. Mills also gave a word to the wise to the Black artists of today’s times:

“The hardest thing for an artist to realize is that you’re just a dollar to most people. […] These Black people out here that are these stars need to know that when you’re invited to people’s homes, you’re just entertainment,” she said. “You’re never their friends. Let’s be clear.”

Can’t argue with Stephanie Mills on that one. She’s giving a very realistic view of the current climate of mainstream R&B, as it pertains to these corporate music labels in the game. Moving on…

Mills On Black Women w/Booty Injections & Her Shade To The Kardashians

“I don’t understand Black women that inject their bodies. […] I don’t understand that. We’re beautiful. And that’s really what I want to point out: that we are beautiful. We don’t have to look like the Kardashians. The Kardashians are trying to look like us.”

Stephanie also talked about her then teen son who has down syndrome, and while doing so, she discussed her fear of the police brutality against Black people:

“What frightens me about raising a beautiful Black child, is the brutality of our policemen…I want you to stop killing us. We’re not animals, we’re NOT. And none of the policemen that did all of this killing with Freddie Gray and Trayvon Martin -I wanted to say their names- and Eric Garner and Sandra Bland, they didn’t get in jail because our system is so corrupt, that the criminals get away. I want the police officers to stop, because if they pull up on me and hurt MY child, you will be reading about me…y’all will be putting something on my books (prison commissary)…”

And boom! Drops mic…exits stage left…

Stephanie Mills

Here, at I Love Old School Music, we’ve just about heard everything there is to know about most of our favorite old school music legends. However, every now n’ then we come across a gem of information that surprises us, which is what the legendary, Stephanie Mills, has now done. She spilled a fun fact about her family that made us go, ‘Say what now…come again?!!’

Turns out, the “I Feel Good All Over” hitmaker is the cousin of a few well known R&B singers. For decades, they kept their familial connect on the low…but not anymore. Ms. Mills let the cat outta the bag and made quite a few jaws drop. Before we reveal who her cousins are, we’ll give you a couple hints: (1) They are some SANGIN’ somebodies!; and (2) They had 90’s R&B on lock. Think you guessed who they are ILOSM fam?’ Well, get your scroll on to see if you’re right…

Stephanie Mills’ Cousins Are…

Jodeci singers,JoJo (L); K-Ci (R)

The “Secret Lady” songstress’ previously ‘secret’ cousins are brothers, K-Ci (Cedric Hailey) and JoJo (Joel Hailey), of Jodeci. Ain’t that a blip?!! Stephanie Mills revealed this on Twitter a while back, while announcing her then new duet, featuring her “cousin,” K-Ci. She even reiterated (for the people in the back) that K-Ci is her “real cousin”…which also means that JoJo is (the brothers have the same Mom and Dad):

Stephanie Mills- Get ready for my new single coming “Afraid To Love” a duet with my cousin K-CI of
@realkcijojo and yes, my real cousin 😁 😄

K-Ci and JoJo’s Other Famous Singing Cousins

Most of us Old Schoolers already know who K-Ci and JoJo’s other famous cousins are, but for anyone who’s been sleep for years, or are ‘young’ old schoolers, here they are…

Dave Hollister (of Blackstreet)

As a member of Teddy Riley’s group, Blackstreet, Dave Hollister (51) was killin’ it, singing lead on hits like, “Before I Let You Go” (above video). He later went solo and tapped into the pain of many dads on his 90’s song, “Baby Mama Drama.” And yep…Dave is K-Ci and JoJo’s cousin too…their fathers are brothers.

FYI: In the 90’s, Teddy Riley reportedly offered Dave a spot in Blackstreet after hearing him sing K-Ci’s part on the duet, “Loving You Is All That I Have To Do,” while touring (as a background singer) with Jodeci, Mary J. Blige, Blackstreet and more. Word on the Old School curb is that Dave was singing K-Ci’s part because K-Ci was beefin’ with his then girlfriend, Mary J. Bilge, and didn’t want to perform with her…but that’s a whole ‘notha story for another day. Moving on…

Fantasia

Fantasia

Fantasia (36) needs NO introduction. Like her big cousins, the former American Idol winner is a SANGIN’ somebody! She can sing the phone book and make us all feel something. Fantasia, K-Ci, and JoJo are first cousins. Their Dads are brothers as well.

Old School Fun Fact:

Prior to their R&B fame, by the time they were teenagers, K-Ci and JoJo had already released 3 gospel albums. They did so with the group, Little Cedric and the Hailey Singers, which also consisted of their pops, Cliff Hailey.

As you can see, music in the DNA of this family tree. You know how the saying goes- ‘Some people just have IT’…and Stephanie Mills, K-Ci, JoJo, Dave Hollister and Fantasia most definitely got ‘it.’

Stephanie Mills

Here at I Love Old School Music, we love a celebrity who ain’t never scared to speak his/her mind, regardless of what anyone else thinks about it. And we can always rely on R&B legend, Stephanie Mills, to do just that…much like she’s now done regarding  Kanye West and Nick Cannon. As y’all already know, Donald Trump supporter, Kanye West, is running for President. As a result, Nick Cannon showed his support for Kanye, stating to TMZ, “I love it! Yeah. We need another black man in power.” Welp, Ms. Mills had more than a few words for both of ’em…

Mills Virtually Chin Checks Kanye & Nick Cannon

In an online video (below) -captioned, “My stance on #KanyeWest and Nick Cannon and our culture”-  Stephanie Mills addressed everything from ‘Ye’s mental state, to Nick’s motive for endorsing him.

(L) Nick Cannon; (R) Kanye West

On Kanye’s mental health:

“I’d like to say a couple of things about, Kanye West and Nick Cannon. First, I know that Kanye is suffering mentally. I know that he is swinging high and low, and I really pray and hope that he gets help.”

She voiced her disappointment and said Kanye is a “distraction”:

“But I must say that I am disappointed because if he’s trying to help our community, but running for President, it’s not helping out our community. He’s not qualified, to be President, neither is the person that’s in the White House at this time.

Kanye is a distraction, and we’re living in some really, really trying times, where we don’t need distractions. What we need is for Kanye to get help. To get on medication, to see a therapist, and to get help. “

Mills then went off on Nick Cannon:

“Nick Cannon, now you? I don’t understand, because I saw you at Pops’ when he gave his speech at his talk, in Chicago not long ago. And then for you to come out and do what you did, like supporting Kanye. What is that? What is that? I don’t understand it. Kanye’s being paid to do what he’s doing, now are we to believe that you’re also being paid to be a distraction? You guys are acting like little boys in a sandbox with toys.”

‘They’re acting like little paid slaves’:

“But being that you’re acting like that, as a mother, I would like to say take your toys, go home, and sit down, and get help and get therapy. Nick you should know better, because you’ve learned and listened to the teachings, so you should know better, ’cause I just saw you. So I just think that, people are losing their homes, people can’t pay their rent, people cannot buy food for their children or their family. We have no time for you two to be out here, acting like little paid slaves, I said it.”

https://www.instagram.com/tv/CDruPxzH95X/?utm_source=ig_embed

Ms. Mills ended her check session with a peace-filled message:

“I wish everybody well. I wish that we weren’t in these times. But you must know that God is God and you have to keep your hands in His hands. And don’t be fearful. Fear is your worst enemy, do not be fearful. Just trust that God is the best knower, okay? I send everyone love, peace, and we’re going to get through this. And on the other side of this is going to be very good. I’m optimistic about it. And I have no fear. So I want everyone to have a peaceful Sunday, listen to music let the sun hit your face.”

Woah! Stephanie Mills had a LOT to get off her chest. Thoughts ILOSM family?

A while back, when we published an article about Stephanie Mills being married to a Shalamar singer back in the day, we realized many people had no clue about them. However, most of their fans were still pleasantly surprised. Although Stephanie and Shalamar’s, Jeffrey Daniel, divorced years ago, we wanted to share excerpts from an Ebony Magazine interview Mills did soon after they’d split, because the honesty and pain she revealed about their love, still resonates today. Stephanie and Jeffrey split in 1982, but didn’t officially divorce until ’83, after just three years of marriage.

Mills’ Biggest Regret About Marriage To Daniel

Stephanie says that one of biggest regrets “is that I didn’t have a baby for my husband. God knows I tried, but it’s something that just never happened. He wanted a son, and I’d still like to have it for him.”

When asked if having a baby for Daniel would have ‘saved their marriage’ at that time, Mills replied:

“Probably, I think it might help,” stated Mills.

She then addressed how her and Daniel’s short marriage unfortunately fit into the celeb’ marriage stereotype:

“I suppose that suggests that ‘show business marriages’ don’t have very good chances of surviving,” Stephanie says. “Both partners are so much in the public eye all the time and when you add that to all the other problems that come up in a ‘normal’ marriage, the picture’s not very bright. Maybe Jeffrey and I will have to do like some other couples- divorce, give ourselves a little time and space, then marry again. Maybe in-between we’ll learn all the lessons a couple has to learn in order to make a marriage survive,” Mills stated at the time of their separation.
