Taraji had a LOT to say today! The box office numbers are in and Hidden Figures has claimed the #1 spot, earning $22.8 million in the first weekend of it’s release.
This is a MAJOR feat, because there were other big budget films that released this past weekend as well and movie critics said that a film starring three African American women- Taraji P. Henson, Janelle Monae, and Octavia Spencer- would never even draw a large audience, let alone claim the top spot.
Ironically, the three actresses faced the same type of scrutiny as the women they were portraying. For those who don’t know, Hidden Figures is the biographical film about two mathematicians- Katherine Johnson (Taraji) and Dorothy Vaughn (Janelle Monae), and one engineer- Mary Jackson (Octavia Spencer)- who were at the core of helping astronaut, John Glenn, make history by becoming the first American to make a complete orbit around earth in 1969. The women accomplished this with double odds stacked against them because they were a double minority- African American and women- in the segregation era. But they beat the hell outta those odds, just like the actresses who portrayed them some 47 years later.
So as you could imagine, Taraji had something to say about the film’s success and she even did a lil’ boasting, but it was well deserved and we’re happy for all of the ladies involved. Check out what Taraji just posted to address her ‘naysayers below…
