Do you remember when Tevin Campbell literally made Ashley Banks faint when he sang happy birthday to her on The Fresh Prince of Bel Air? Someone who can make the girls fall to their knees will always be relevant. But last year, author Luvvie Ajayi questioned why the ’90s R&B singer was to perform at Aretha Franklin’s tribute.

“Someone suggested Tevin Campbell to sing at Aretha tribute,” Ajayi wrote. “Under what rock did they pull that name from?”

It forced the likes of Missy Elliot and Wale to stand up for Campbell. It also landed him a new job opportunity. Academy Award nominated director Ava Duvernay cast him in Queen Sugar.

In the past Campbell has worked with the likes of Quincy Jones, Prince, and Babyface. But Aretha Franklin was the only celebrity that ever made him nervous.

“The only celebrity that made me nervous…each time I saw her I acted like a nervous fan,” Campbell wrote about Franklin in the days after her passing. The first thing she would say to me was “How is your mom?” I literally studied every movement, every specific great thing she did with her voice. This queen was/is everything to me.”
