Remember the kid who played Vivica Foxx’s son “Ahmad” in the classic ’90s film, Soul Food? His name is Brandon Hammond and we were over here reminiscing about the 90’s and his name was one of the first to come up. We then figured that we probably weren’t the only ones who wanna know where this dude disappeared to after Soul Food, so we’ll feel you in.
Recap Of “Soul Food” Actor’s Career
But first, for those who may not be familiar with Brandon’s work as an actor, here’s a quick breakdown: After Brandon got his break in his first film, Menace II Society, the gigs started rolling in and soon he was the in high demand for any gig that needed a great child actor. He had roles inWaiting To Exhale, Space Jam, Mars Attack, and The Fan. But his most well known role was Soul Food and after he proved just how great of a child actor he was able to land a few more roles in the movie, Blue Hill Avenue, and on a few TV shows such as The West Wing, The Gregory Hines Show, Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, Early Edition, Our America and Penn & Tellers Sin City Spectacular. Then it seems as if his light just kind of faded and we never saw this cat again.
He’s A Grown Man Now
Here’s Brandon today at 38 years old. As you can see, he is a grown man, but he’s still very recognizable. Pretty sure, it’s hard for him to walk through the streets without somebody saying “Yo, aren’t you the dude from Soul Food?”
Life is going well for him apparently; and when we found him, we were were pleasantly surprised. Why? Because Brandon did not fall into that ‘kid actor’ syndrome that so many childhood actors succumb to.
As far as we know, Brandon isn’t married and he doesn’t have any children as of yet. He has been in a committed relationship with his girlfriend, Jenesis, for years and they seem to have a beautiful relationship. Check her out below.
As for his career, Brandon hasn’t appeared in many films or TV shows since approximately 2002, but it would be great to see him back on the scene again because he is a hell of an actor. We’ll never forget about the scene toward the end of Soul Food, where he cried on cue at the family dinner and put all of the adults in check. Brandon’s acting in that scene was priceless and it showed just how seasoned his acting abilities were.
Any kid actor who was that good at such a young age, deserves another shot in the game.
Expressed His Gratitude On 38th Birthday
For his 38th birthday in February of this year, Brandon expressed his appreciation for the growth he’s seen within himself in the past 10 years, following his beloved mother’s passing:

“Today I celebrate another trip around the Sun! ☀️ My 38th to be exact. I decided to choose my birthday to participate in the #10yearchallenge as well. It’s amazing what a decade can do. I am certainly not the same young man I was at 28 that I am now at 38. As you can see from the pictures, the physical changes are obvious. I went from a barely-there goatee to a full-on beard with a guest appearance from all that salt sprinkled amongst the pepper, lol.
But, the not-so-obvious changes are what I’m most amazed by. The picture on the left was taken almost 10 years to the day, 8 months after my mother passed. I was still in the storm of trying to figure out life without her; it was my first birthday celebration without her. I was unsure of how to navigate a brand new existence and life—one in which I had to rely less on my Mom’s physical presence and more on the things my mother taught me.
The picture on the right was taken earlier today as I was getting ready for the day and celebrating my life the way I wanted to. And, I most certainly did. Today, for my birthday, I just wanted to hear from people I loved the most and spend it with the people I loved the most. Those were the gifts I wanted and I got them in abundance!”
Although we’d love to see Brandon Hammond acting again, it’s good to see the brotha enjoying life and doing what makes him happy these days.
