Whenever biopics are released, there’s always opposition from somewhere. In most cases, everyone won’t agree with the depiction of the events documented and soon after the The New Edition Story was aired, it was at the center of the biopic debate. It looks like R&B legend, Stacey Lattisaw’s, family had something to say about the movie, because they aren’t pleased with how she was depicted. See what they’re pissed about below.
Johnny’s Explanation For the Breakup Is Why Lattisaw Fam’ Was Pissed:
The three-part miniseries, which chronicled the group’s humble beginnings in Roxbury, Massachusetts, their slow rise to fame, and the opposition they faced while at the top, also revealed details about their personal lives.
From relationships and personal struggles to faulty contracts, the film covered a lot of ground. But, apparently, Johnny’s reason for the breakup with his ex-girlfriend, Stacy Lattisaw, angered her family.
Many of you may recall that during a scene in the movie, Johnny was in the studio with Ralph Tresvant and the two discussed the breakup. Johnny suggested the breakup was because of his skin color. Apparently, the dark skinned singer was a bit ‘too dark’ for fair-skinned Stacy.
Her Brother’s Response:
Stacy’s brother, Jerry Lattisaw, spoke on behalf of his family. During an interview with The Jasmine Brand, Jerry sounded off about the scene and what it implied.
Jerry defended his sister and mother. He also revealed his mother played a major role in Johnny’s career and helped him secure his first record deal.
“My mom don’t care about what color Johnny Gill is!!! If it wasn’t for her, he wouldn’t be in New Edition period!!! She basically got him his first record deal …. by the way, Stacy husband is brown skin too!!! How they gon’ put my motha out there like that! JG u still my brother tho!”
Jerry Lattisaw’s statement garnered an array of opinions, with most New Edition fans claiming the Lattisaw family feels overshadowed in some way.
However, other viewers aren’t surprised the line has drawn criticism.
Johnny Gill, on the other hand, came back and adamantly stated- in an interview with The Breakfast Club- that he has no reason to fabricate anything regarding the reasons behind his relationship breakup with Stacy Lattisaw.
What do you think about that scene from the movie? Think it was pinpoint accurate, or a fabrication of Johnny’s imagination?
