Jenifer Lewis will always be Jenifer Lewis. Whatever comes up comes out and that’s one of the many things that makes the talented comedian/actress so special. So, when she appeared at the 2018 NAACP Image Awards on January 15, her speech was as expected. Although things took an awkward turn with Lewis’ onstage blunder, the award acceptance started out relatively normal.
The Award Acceptance:
According to Yahoo! News, Black-ish turned out to be one of the biggest winners of the night snagging multiple awards including Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series for Anthony Anderson and Outstanding Actress for Tracee Ellis Ross. But when Black-ish won for Outstanding Comedy Series, the whole cast gathered onstage to accept the accolade.
The Onstage Blunder:
Surrounded by Lawrence Fishburne, Anthony Anderson, Tracee Ellis Ross and the rest of the cast, Jenifer Lewis accepted the award. However, things took an unexpected turn when Lewis dropped the award. Needless to say, everyone was in shock but Anderson saved the day with a quick comeback. “Just like my real mother, can’t take her nowhere!” quipped Anderson who plays Lewis’ cast member and on-screen son.

My Black Is Beautiful:
Despite the onstage blunder, Black-ish is still soaring to new heights. The NAACP award acceptance follows reports about the show’s next major topics. According to theGrio, the show recently tackled the disheartening talk so many African American parents have been forced to have with their children due to the rise of officer-involved shootings. The alarming 2017 statistics are exactly why the show chose to tackle the situation so early in the year.
According to the Washington Post’s database of fatal police shootings, 987 people were killed by police in 2017. Of those 987 people, 22 percent were Black men, even though Black men comprise just 6 percent of the overall U.S. population. It’s a startling statistic that adds yet another layer of worry for parents every time their kids leave the house.
This week on #blackish we teamed up with @mbib for a special episode on The Talk – the inevitable conversations black parents have with children about bias. Tune in Tuesday, 1/16 at 9|8c on @ABCNetwork to watch. Sponsored by P&G's @mbib pic.twitter.com/uIPcGjRiYb
