Son of Berry Gordy, Kerry Gordy, was a member of the band, Apollo, which released an album on Gordy Records in 1979. Later, he worked as a staff writer and producer at Motown under his given name, Kerry Ashby. He continues to work as an entertainment industry executive today.
Sounds like a combination of “Lucious'” sons, “Jamal” and “Andre.”
Berry Gordy’s other son, singer Rockwell, who earned his deal with Motown without his father’s knowledge, recorded his biggest hit, 1984’s “Somebody’s Watching Me”, which included background vocals by Michael Jackson. He retired from music in the late 1980s. Again, this is similar to “Lucious'” sons who are also artists signed to his label.
On “Empire” “Lucious” promised “Jamal’s” wife, “Olivia” (Raven Symone) he’d make her an R&B star and then he impregnated her with their daughter…he never made her a star though.
Berry Gordy had a thing going on with Diana starting in 1965, they fell in love and produced a child, Rhonda Ross, in 1971.
We love the fact that Empire is paying homage to music dynasties like Berry Gordy’s and others in the music industry, but again, all I’m saying is somebody probably deserves a check for that “Empire” story-line if you ask me…LOL.
