ILOSM fam, it looks like things are getting ugly between Gladys Knight and her son, Shanga Hankerson. For those who missed it, Gladys Knight filed a lawsuit against her son following his arrest back in June. The famed singer wants her name removed from the restaurant but her son refuses to budge. However, Gladys Knight isn’t taking “no” for an answer.

Gladys’ Response:

According to The Grio, she’s fired back with a jaw-dropping allegation questioning her son’s mental capacity where the restaurant battle is concerned. Although she’s not considered a suspect in the case, she wants her name to be completely removed from anything associated with the restaurant.

In the lawsuit, Knight argues that the faltering reputation of his famed restaurant, Gladys Knight’s Chicken and Waffles, stands to damage her name and reputation as well. She also wants the restaurant to refrain from using her recipes and return her memorabilia that has been featured in the restaurant.

“The Restaurants are in free fall and their decline necessarily has the collateral effect of damaging Knight’s Intellectual Property and Knight’s reputation,” says the suit.

She’s also “demanding damages for Hankerson’s continued use of her name on the restaurant chain, as well as ‘certain proprietary recipes and memorabilia, including Knight’s dresses/costumes and photographs featuring Knight and other celebrities,” according to Atlanta Daily Word.

Gladys Knight has also released a statement supporting the details of the lawsuit. “Until the legal issues are resolved it is best to remove my name because I do not have an interest in or influence over the restaurants. I have invested sixty-years of my life developing my craft, name, and brand and I do not want my name associated with the business at this time.”

Shanga’s Legal Woes:

Back in June, Shanga Hankerson made headlines when he turned himself in after the restaurants were raided. It has been reported that Shanga misappropriated restaurant funds for sex parties and marijuana.

Due to the financial shortages, many restaurant employees were left unpaid. There were even times where employees worked in unsanitary conditions because Hankerson was forced to cut costs. The unhealthy changes reportedly led to poor health inspections. Hankerson has been charged with two counts of felony theft.

Despite Gladys Knight’s claims, Hankerson adamantly insists his mother was compensated for damages and he wants her lawsuit thrown out.
